Patrick & Melissa's elopement in Galveston, Texas
August 4, 2016
Patrick and Melissa were planning their wedding for October in Houston and booked me as their photographer quite awhile ago. Meanwhile, Melissa's mother had been in and out of the hospital in Galveston when eventually, Melissa decided that she didn't want to have a wedding where her mother couldn't be in attendance. So, they dropped all of their plans and decided to get married in June in Galveston, just the two of them and their parents and luckily I was able to make the trip.
I woke up and set out to the Airbnb that they'd rented- a weird hodge podge of art and beautiful wooden floors that you'd never guess from the outside. Melissa & Patrick were listening to music and slowly getting ready. When Melissa put her dress on, I asked Patrick to play a song that's special to the two of them for their first look. After a choice that made Melissa laugh so so hard, hidden behind the door, he settled on LCD Soundsystem's, "Dance Yrself Clean" and the two of them cuddled and smiled and I couldn't have been happier. A minute in to their first look, I had them tell me the story of them and it actually included dancing for the first time as strangers to the song that we were then listening to in their wedding outfits. Come on.
We spent some time taking pictures in the home and then headed to the courthouse to meet with Patrick's parents and Melissa's father. The judge that married them was practically a stand up comic and it was a light hearted, quick, and sentimental ceremony.
Afterwards, we all headed to the hospital so that Melissa's mom could see them. Once the hugging was over, Patrick and Melissa stood by the window of the hospital room and reread their vows for Melissa's mom so that she could also hear them. This was not the first time or the last time that I cried that day.
Being able to experience this day was so good for my heart. Their love for each other has such a kindness to it and it's a really beautiful thing to be a part of.
